History of 1 Dock Street

The Leeds waterfront has changed dramatically over the centuries - from a thriving industrial hub to a contemporary neighbourhood of shops, bars and riverside living. Yet traces of its rich heritage remain, giving the area a distinctive character that makes it both a fascinating and desirable place to call home.

No.1 Dock Street began life in the 1800s as a commercial warehouse, at a time when Leeds Bridge and the canal network were at the centre of the city’s industrial growth. In 1888, the building played a quiet role in cinematic history: Louis Le Prince captured the world’s first moving image, Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge, from a window that now forms part of a private apartment.

The red-brick conversion was once home to the British Waterways offices, while the site of the adjacent new-build block was previously occupied by another warehouse. With the rise of city centre living in the late 1980s, the area saw a second life. Developer Wilson Connolly (now part of Taylor Wimpey) transformed the original building into apartments, and brought in respected local architects Carey Jones to design a sympathetic modern addition.

Completed in the early 2000s, the new-build received the City of Leeds Award for its contribution to the evolving urban landscape - a balance of heritage and progress that still defines No.1 Dock Street today.

The Area

Situated on the banks of the River Aire in Leeds’ dynamic Riverside Village, No.1 Dock Street is a collection of 93 exceptional residences - combining the character of sensitively converted 19th-century architecture with the refinement of contemporary new-build design.

Moments from Leeds Station, Brewery Wharf and the emerging green heart of the city - Aire Park - our location offers a rare balance: urban connectivity, riverside calm and a true sense of community. Whether within the original red-brick heritage buildings or the elegant modern extension, every apartment reflects the quality and attention to detail expected of a landmark city development.

At No.1 Dock Street, we believe in more than just a place to live. We believe in neighbourliness, pride of place, and a city centre lifestyle that doesn’t sacrifice soul.
